WinZip - Zip, unzip, protect App Reviews
I decided to get this app because it was Mac and PC compatible and the company is reputable. I finally swallowed the idea of paying $30 for an app when there are comparable ones for less than $10. I opened the software and was able to add my files relatively easily to a zip file. Unfortunately, when I went to password protect/encrypt the zip file, the option was nowhere to be found. After using the somewhat useless Help menu and Google searches, I finally found something that alluded to highlighting the files and then saving them to a zip in order to password encrypt them… and that did the trick. The option should be available from the WinZip menu. I’d like to see this in the next update.
No apparent way to encrypt!!!!!!!!! Instuctions are useless!!!!! They say simply use a long password. But, there is no place to type it. It automatically creates a useless zip file that is not encrypted, AES 256 is chosen in preferences. AFter a zip file is automatically created( to be deleted) highlight the folder in the zip file and right click (Control-click), then save to a zip file. Only because somone else took the time to write a comment did I figure this out. There needs to be an option to encrypt pop up when the initial zip is created. This should be turned on or off in preferences.
Same high quality
This version keeps up the same high quality as previous versions...
This is a good app! Compatible with every PC zip file Ive thrown at it. Easy enough to use and more Mac-like than I expect most PC-originated software to work. If you need a fully PC winzip-compatible app, this more than does the job.
WinZip has been around since 1991 and is a staple of modern computing. I purchased this for better zip management and zip encryption. As others have mentioned, encryption isn’t readily apparent, yet the support exists. Open WinZip, and create a new zip file. Click the "Add" button on the tool bar to add files to the archive. From the Finder window that pops up, click the "Encrypt" checkbox at the bottom, then enter in a strong archive password twice. Click the "Zip" button, and you’ve got your encrypted archive. I would recommend going to the WinZip menu > Preferences, and changing the Encryption Method to "AES-256bit," which can only be extracted by WinZip (Encryption Method "Zip 2.0" provides password protection and compatibility for other OSs). I agree with others, there should be an "Encrypt" button on the toolbar. Beyond that, the program works as designed.
It’s WinZip
It’s winzip. If you need it to unzip a file, you buy it and it works as you would expect.
This is the only way I’ve found to encrypt zip files that will reliably decompress on both Windows and Macintosh (when Encryption Method is set to “Zip 2.0"). I’d would have rated 5 stars, but I’ve found the encryption process a tad confusion to figure out.
App will not compress photo and pdf. It zips the files, but the compression is either nonexistent or very little. If you just want to zip files, but not compress files, this program is for you. If you’re looking or compression, keep looking for another app. The App details do not mention these points. I’m very disappointed that Apple would allow this app on their site.
Can’t live without it! OK, **almost** can’t live without it. :-) I have used Winzip it first came out for Windows. Now that I am an Apple convert, I am glad that there is a version for OS X. Love it! I am all the way in for Winzip!
It works great for Zip & Unzip, but I would like if it supported additional Mac/Unix formats like gZip for unzipping. It would also be handy to be able to specify a file should be encrypted when saving a zip and/or when dropping onto the zip window vs having to use the Add button or drop on the dock icon to get the option.
It works, but it has a really unfriendly user interface that makes it confusing about exactly what are you are doing. They are more focused on the created zip file than they are on what I would expect as a workflow. You have to specify encryption when you add a file to the archive, and to do that you can’t use the drag and drop into the open app interface, you have to use the [+] button and then select encrypted then choose your file.
works for me
I trust winzip, use it at work, not sure I want to trust shareware with zip encryption.
