WinZip - Zip, unzip, protect App Reviews

Good app

This app is in adequation with the expectations I have. No issue met up to now.

Simply the best!

I would say its easy, smart and everyday use software -> strong 5 stars

Horrible User Interface

The program does a better job, both in terms of speed and compression, than the Mac OS “Compress” built-in function. However, the user interface and extremely poor integration with the Mac Finder makes WinZip a real loser. There is no indication that a comression is in progress, so you never know whether it is doing the work or waiting for you to enter some more directives. Really shoddy piece of work.

Important Feature Missing

The WinZip Mac version does not support split files. If it is not planned to be include in future version/update… then I will ask my money back ! It doesnt worth 26.99 eur, unfortunatly. :/

Bad management of zipping files!

Adding files, especially big ones, will let the program start zipping them, even in the main window!! First add files, and then compress them ONLY when I save the file!

works fine

The app works fine so far

Only zip for mac with pwd protect

I thought it didnt work but it took too long for the program to flag an overlay that it wouldnt zip files that were still open and in use by another application. It does work, just make sure you dont have the files you are zipping open. Many thanks.

way too expensive for what it does

This program works well but I am very disappointed with the value for money here. Avoid this program until you have looked carefully at the less expensive alternatives.

The best ever

Since forever, always been the best, always been a user. Thanks for the compression and security.

Not sure it is the real winzip.

This program has very limited functionality compared to windows version. 1) You can not create multipart files 2) Uncompressing archives over 1 gb takes much much more then twice the time of alternative osx unarchievers. (x10 or x100 maybe x1000 more time as I couldn’t stand and wait canceling the task). Not recommended to anyone. Use free alternatives for osx. They are lightyears better then this.

It does not have all the features the MS Windows version has...

It is the well known Winzip but I have sadly discovered after my purchase that Winzip for MacOS does not have some of the features MS Windows version has, such as dividing archive files into segments etc. Therefore the price of the app is a bit steep for what it offers. Hoping to see that it will be improved in the coming versions and come up to par with Winzip at other platforms.

Best Archive Tool

expensive but simple the best

Worst App.

I don’t normally write reviews. But this application is so bad that I felt compelled to write one for this. It has never worked ever since I bought it (around 6-7 months back). Even though Mac provides a default utility to extract the zip contents, I wanted to be able to look at the contents of the zip file before extracting which is why I bought this application. The application opens the zip file and I could look at the contents, but when I try to extract the content, it throws an error MOST of the time. And I end up using the default application that Mac provides. I would not recommend this application to anybody.

wasting money

I jsut purchased this app in order to save disc space. Only after getting into the app does one discover that video files will not compress further with this app. I have just wasted $30 in order to try to save space that cannot be saved. The developers might want to put that out front regarding video compression unless they are purposefully trying to rip people off.

Terrible Interface.

Overpriced, underdelivered. Features seem to work, but some (especially password-related) are poorly implemented and difficult to use.

No multipart compression.

Everything’s great but it does not create multi-part archives, at least I haven’t been able to do that. That is why if if doesn’t, I’m already requested a refund. Sorry guys. Good for some people, not good for Usenet users.

Winzip is a win

In the days of old with limited bandwidth and high cost storage, getting maximum compression was all-important. These days, the ability to quickly create an encrypted archive for cloud storage is more important; old school Winzip gets the job done and it’s cross platform. Of course Winzip was a Windows original and when it came to the Mac, the first iterations weren’t all that great but it’s markedly improved and I find it much easier to use than Stuffit. The availablity of the most current version on the Mac App Store is another plus.

works overall but can’t view items in a zip archive without extracting

First of all, let me say it is a relief to have this program on the Mac. I used it for years on Windows although recently switched to the freeware alternative, 7-zip. It amazes me that there is no decent zip archive viewer on the Mac. Something like WinZip was sorely needed. I use this app multiple times every day. Opening zip files and viewing the contents - works perfectly. Updating the contents of a zip - great. Creating a new zip file - great. Viewing an file in the zip? BZZT! Double click on a text file in the zip and… it opens up some strange folder window showing some info about the file size… Why can’t it copy the file to a temporary directory and open the file in the app bound to that file type? That’s what it does on Windows. Instead, I have to select to extract the file to my mac, via a button in the GUI, or by dragging it to a folder. And if it’s a file I just wanted to take a quick peek at and forget about, now I have to remember to also delete the file after I’m done with it. This is all automatic on Windows. Double click on a file in the zip and that’s all it takes. Hopefully they’ll eventually make it just as simple a process on the Mac.

Errors

This is a smooth program to use, however, the new mac update OS is blocking it from working. Gents get around this and this will be a 5 star app.

Halfway there

The app works fine as advertized, and brings zipx format to the Mac. That’s worth 3 stars to me. But there are a lot of thing still lacking in this. The QuickLook looks _awful_, and is almost worthless for looking inside of the file. Maybe I wouldn’t expect something as polished as BetterZipQL, but what Winzip has provided is lame. This version (3.1) only gives you the option of saving to zip or zipx formats. There is no ability to control the degree and type of compression like there has been for the past 20 years in the Windows version.
